Superman Font History

The typeface has been used in several major motion pictures and other DC Comics products. The Big Bang Theory made a parody of this logo: “Superbman” (an ironical take on the Superman concept).

In 1995, Comicraft released an alternate version called Superfont. It was optimized for legibility as a desktop font, and included a slashed zero.

In 2001, the Superman typeface was re-released as a font by the company “Comicraft”. This version contained lowercase characters and other additions that were not present in previous releases. In 2006, Comicraft again released an alternate version of the Superman logo called Ultrasonex, which was designed for maximum legibility and inlined the characters’ contours.

In 2012, Marvel Comics announced that they would be using Jim Lee’s Superman typeface for all their future publications. DC Entertainment then filed a lawsuit against Marvel for copyright infringement, but it was eventually discovered that DC didn’t own the rights to the typeface. The font was first used for the covers of Avengers Vs. X-Men and Wolverine And The X-Men.

The typeface has also been used on DC Comics merchandise, including shirts, hats, posters, coffee mugs, buttons and stickers.

It is widely considered to be one of the most popularly recognized logos in American pop culture.

In March 2012, DC Comics announced that it will not renew its licensing contract for the Superman logo typeface with Jim Lee’s private company, Wildstorm Productions.

On July 23, 2013, it was announced that DC Comics would be teaming up with type foundry “FontFont”, to create a new and updated version of the Superman logo. The update was designed by renowned typeface designer Christian Schwartz, and would be available for licensing under exclusive global agreement with FontFont.

On October 16, 2013, DC Comics unveiled the new Superman logo at New York Comic Con (NYCC). It was released to the general public on December 9, 2013. The logo was the result of a collaboration between DC Comics and Schwartz. Schwartz said that he wanted to “create an updated look for Superman that conveys the character’s vitality and power.” He also noted, “The symbol on his chest is loaded with history and meaning for comic book fans, so it wasn’t my goal to redesign that. Rather I wanted the new logo to communicate that this is a new Superman for a new era.”
